The world’s serious shortage of science (and mathematics) teachers is now colliding with our need for talented and knowledgeable science teachers. Across the world, there are ongoing reports about the lack of adequately prepared science teachers. UNESCO (2023a), for instance, recently highlighted the declining number of individuals electing to enter the science teaching profession, along with a significant number of teachers leaving the field within their first 5 years.
This article is a commentary by Julie Luft, University of Georgia Distinguished Research Professor and former National Science Teaching Association President, on issues that concern teacher induction where she argues that induction practices need to change.
